Prophet Muhammad (s)’s heart was filled with joy and thanked almighty for bestowing this great honour upon him when he was formally chosen as the last and final Messenger to humankind. This started the beginning of the divine mission to spread Islam and invite people to the call of truth. Despite the attempts of the Arab infidels to suppress the call of truth, the young Muslim community began to grow in numbers as more and more people flocked to the call of Islam, For a time period of 23 years Prophet (s) invited people to the call of truth and continued to spread Islam in the other parts of the world until his demise at the age of 63.
The Quran, together with prophet’s (s) tradition remains a guiding light for all mankind and to ensure their correct meaning and application, Allah granted the leadership of Muslim Community to Ahlulbait (as) who are the torchbearers of guidance for all Muslims.
Fatima (sa) was the only daughter of Prophet Muhammad (s). He was the affectionate father and Fatima (sa) was dearer to him more than life. His famous saying: “Fatima (sa) is a part of me, and whoever annoys her (in fact) annoys me” stands a firm testimony to this fact. Prophet Muhammad married his daughter Fatima (sa) to his faithful cousin Hazrat Ali (as).
At one of the event in the history of Islam, known as “Ghadeer” he proclaimed those famous word thrice “For whomsoever I am master, this Ali is his master” which would save the Muslim Community from going astray.
Within 90 days of Demise of Holy Prophet, the martyrdom of Lady Fatima (sa) commenced. Within less than 50 years of demise of the Holy Prophet (s), the Muslim ummah was sliding into the corruption under the Umayyad dynasty.
Husain ibne Ali (as), grandson of Prophet Muhammad (s) took stand against the oppressive ruler, Yazid. Husain (a) was admired and respected in society. In the meanwhile, Yazid decided that he would demand Husain’s (a) allegiance, with a hope to gain some form of legitimacy for his inherited rule.
Husain (a) had a choice to make. Oath of allegiance to Yazid would no doubt mean a handsome reward. To refuse it this would invariably lead to death. Husain (a) chose to follow the teachings of his grandfather as he desire to enjoin good values and prevent Evil and said “the person like me never give allegiance to person like yazid”.
On the 2nd Day of the first month of the lunar calendar (Muharram) Husain (a) reached karbala. Obeying the order of Yazid, the commander of oppressive army blocked all access to water so that Husain (a) & his men cannot drink it. The water blockade continued up to the end of the battle on 10th of Muharram.
The battle was between a small group of supporters and relatives of Muhammad (s)'s grandson Hussein ibn Ali (a), and a much larger military detachment from the forces of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph, to whom Hussein (a) had refused to give an oath of allegiance.
On the night before the battle, Hussein (a) gathered his group and told them that they were all free to leave the camp in the middle of the night, under cover of darkness, rather than face certain death if they stayed with him as he knew that it was his life that Yazid wanted.
On the day of battle One by one from Husain (a) army were killed, and the Yazidi forces massed around Husain (a), eventually killing him including his six month old infant son Ali Asgar. Imam Husain (a) took Ali Asgar in battlefield to show the condition of 6 month old child without water and asking water for him. The reply was an arrow that pierced Ali Asgar’s neck.
Today, almost 14 centuries after Husain (a) was brutally killed, millions of people around the world are inspired by the life and stand of Husain (a). Every year, millions commemorate the anniversary of his death, on the 10th day of the first month of the lunar calendar (Muharram), also known as ‘the Day of Ashura’.
In remembrance of the tragedy, people resolve to change their lives and take Husain (a) and his men as a role model who chose the right way over the easy way.
Keeping the thirst of six month old child in mind, free water distribution campaigns are done at many places. Walking on the Husain (a) Path people stand out and support the oppressed for the sake of humanity, for brotherhood, for unity to raise voice against the oppressors of time who are killing innocent people across the globe.
Let us support the cause.
